Kei to the City

This one means a lot to me, and if you were ever into cars it might land the same way for you.

Kei to the City is the soundtrack Moog made for the Mighty Car Mods film of the same name, back in 2014. If you don’t know Mighty Car Mods, it’s two guys out of Australia who built one of the best car communities on the internet, mostly off cheap Japanese imports and stuff they modified themselves. Moog is Blair, one half of the duo, and it turns out he’s not just a car guy. He’s a working producer who’s been scoring ads and films for years. So the soundtrack to his own movie was never going to be an afterthought.

And you can tell he actually lives it. It’s electronic music made by someone who knows what a late night drive with the windows down actually feels like. The song titles say it all on their own. Forced Induction. Highway Crimes. Drive.

The whole thing is warm and it moves, big basslines, a rotating cast of singers handling the hooks. It doesn’t drag. You can put it on start to finish and just let it run, which is rarer than it should be.

For me it lands in a really specific place. This was right when I was all the way into the import scene, treating my car like it was part of the family, and this was what played while all of that was happening. Going back to it, it still holds up better than I expected. There was a whole world of people who sort of found themselves through their cars, and this record sounds exactly like that felt.
