Pop Culture — Madeon (15 Years to the Day)

Fifteen years ago today. Not fifteen years ago this month, not around this time, but exactly to the day. July 11, 2011. I did a double take when I did the math.

Some songs you discover. This one I witnessed. There’s a difference.

Back then I was deep in my festival summers, writing for Earmilk, chasing sets across fields on whatever budget a music blogger could scrape together, not a single care weighing me down. And somewhere in the middle of all that, a video showed up. A skinny French kid named Hugo Leclercq, seventeen years old, hunched over a Novation Launchpad, was about to fold thirty-nine songs into three and a half minutes without ever looking rattled.

“Pop Culture” wasn’t just a good mashup. It was a thesis statement for an entire moment. Alphabeat bleeding into Daft Punk bleeding into The Buggles bleeding into Gwen Stefani, all of it locked to a grid of blinking pads that Madeon triggered like he was playing an instrument nobody had figured out yet. Because he basically was. You watched his hands and you understood, in real time, that the rules had just changed.

This was the golden hour of music blogs. Hype Machine was trying to make sense of all the angles, everybody chasing the next upload, the next stumble-upon, the next unknown who’d drop something that reordered your week. We were music miners, all of us. I’d spend my nights digging through Minecraft and then digging through YouTube for new and upcoming artists, and honestly the two felt like the same activity. Chip away at the noise, find the vein of something bright, haul it back to share.

Madeon was one of those veins that turned out to be an entire mountain. He went on to produce for everyone, drop “Good Faith,” headline the rooms he used to soundtrack from a laptop. But this clip, this exact three minutes and twenty-four seconds, is the artifact. It’s what it felt like when the internet was still handing you the future by accident and you were young enough to catch it with both hands.

Fifty-plus million views and fifteen years later, it still hits the same. Exactly the same, exactly to the day. Press play.

“Pop Culture” by Madeon (Hugo Leclercq). Uploaded July 11, 2011. Made with FL Studio and Ableton Live, played live on a Novation Launchpad and Novation Zero SL MKII. 39 songs mashed into one. Full source tracklist available in the original YouTube description.
