There Came An Echo

This is the soundtrack Big Giant Circles made for the game There Came an Echo back in 2015, and it’s the kind of thing that’s easy to sleep on because it came out of the video game world instead of the usual channels.

Big Giant Circles is Jimmy Hinson, a guy who’s written music for and around games for years. If you’ve played anything with a big electronic score in the last decade there’s a decent chance you’ve heard his fingerprints somewhere. This one is him doing a full front to back album, not just background loops, and you can tell he treated it that way.

It moves between big cinematic electronic stuff and these more emotional, melodic moments, with some real orchestral weight underneath. Tracks like “The Echo” and “Kinetic Potential” hit hard, and then there’s stuff like “Outside the Realm” with Ashly Burch and Malukah on vocals that goes somewhere completely different and works. There’s even a Ronald Jenkees feature on here, which if you know that name, you know.

The thing I like about it is it never feels like a soundtrack that’s just serving the game. It stands up entirely on its own. You can throw it on with no context and it holds together as an album, which is rare for game music.

Worth your time even if you never touched the game.
